Artist's Statement

I'm red/green colorblind, and for the longest time I didn't really think that mattered that much in my art. But as I have gotten older, I have realized that the way that I see things is probably a little different than yours, and that variance in perception is what makes a painting that I make my truth. There are a lot of things that affect how I see the world - from where I grew up, what kind of support I've had, to the privileges afforded to me. And there are even more things that affect the way that I put a brush to canvas - from the time that I fell into a barbed wire fence when I was six and my left ring finger is still a little wonky, to my occasional impatience mixing colors on a palette. My art is the sum of my experiences whether intentional or not.

Sometimes it may seem like an artist made an interesting choice on a canvas. But I think what is much more interesting is the choices that the artist wasn't able to make.
